pipes? they are admittedly hot, but they’re just screaming. and there’s nothing special about screaming. I like the music (and vocals), but using the word “pipes” seems like a word reserved for someone who can actually sing.
on the other hand, chick singers in metal and punk bands have moved a long way away from sounding like Siouxie (and the Banshees) – who I could not stand.
and at the risk of sounding even more sexist (and troll-ish) and starting some kind of internet word battle…. there’s just something about metal bands with girl singers that seems weird to me. the anger seems anti-feminine.
of course that contradicts everything I’ve ever experienced with the women in my life so I’m not sure why I feel that way… I guess because I grew up in an era of cock-rock and posing (which I also couldn’t stand) and is, in retrospect, sort of feminine. so really maybe it’s just the natural progression of things and I’m stuck in the past…
so to sum up:
yes, yes, yes, and definitely yes.

i havent watched the video yet, but the new singer, annette, is a lot more “poppy” than tarja was. tarja was incredible, and a huge reason why i fell in love with the band in the first place. i have also found that i kinda have a soft spot in my heart for opera, for whatever reason.

@compasseagle89: Have you listened to Dark Passion Play? They kicked Tarja a couple of years ago and hired a new girl. Marco sings on several tracks (a fact I think was involved with Tarja’s leaving) and I think they really pulled things together.

likei said, its a little too poppy compared to when they had tarja, but dark passion play is nonetheless incredible. i saw that tour in san francisco in november 2007. it was a lot of fun. pre and post tarja have pros and cons. i miss tarja, but i think i could get used to annette. shes just different from the nightwish i was introduced to.
