@PaganPaul: She adopted the punk look a bit before she lost her powers, not long after a knife-fight with Callisto during the Morlocks storyline. She was supposed to feel 'darker' after that or somesuch (it was probably just Claremont thinking she looked cooler this way.) IIRC, Kitty Pryde was very upset.
