Seitan is the Devil in turkish, or something like that.

    CathyLong
    TrayShadix

    Cute marketing at least.

    MonkeyHitman

    atleast it’s healty *gulp*

    RSIxidor

    CathyLong:
I’m going to be very seriously honest with you: This stuff tastes really fucking good. One of the few “veggie protein” foods that I’ve actually eaten just by cooking, without any spices or sauce, and still really enjoyed. In fact, I think its the only one. “Wheat meat” is also not to bad. Tofu, while probably the most versatile, always requires some amount of spicing or other preparation to get tasty. Beans are beans, and veggies are veggies.

    RSIxidor

Huh, apparently “wheat meat” is seitan. It certainly looks different, commonly provided shredded in package.

    MonkeyHitman

RSIxidor: if you know how bad i want some red kidney beans right now. my god, red kidney beans soup with veggies and rice & Johnny cake. *drool*. i don’t get that island delicacy up here in Holland.comment image

    venek

I can proudly say I’m a seitanist. Vegan ftw

    dieAntagonista

venek: Hear hear. That means we have already 3 vegans on the site. You, RSI and me. Awesomesauce.

    Sticky

Sorry vegan people. I just can’t resist the draw of a good steak. 🙁

    RSIxidor

    Sticky:
What if the steak draws first?

    Annarchy

dieAntagonista: Do we lowly vegetarians get included in the MCS non-meat-eaters club?

    dieAntagonista

Annarchy: No way. Is that true? How sweet is that. The more the merrier! Also, the more I learn about you, the more awesome you get.

I don’t even know if I count as a vegan yet. I hesitate to tell people, because the usual answer I get is, what? You have been vegan for only 6 months? Oh it’s just a phase.

But I haven’t eaten any meat or fish since I was 13 so that counts I’m sure.

    gx5000

    No Steak ?
    No way !
    NO SAUCE FOR YOU !

“Awesomesauce” is reserved for my Poterhouse thank you.

    Annarchy

    dieAntagonista:
How sweet are you? See, I knew there was a reason I liked this place, and it’s you and nyokki!

In my opinion, whether it’s 6 days, 6 months or 6 years, you are trying and therefore you qualify. It’s only a phase if you keep going back and forth, which, honestly, is baffling to me.

I eat fish and milk products, so I can’t be vegan.

    dieAntagonista

I knew someone would come and say that. I was wondering if awesomesauce was vegan… alright. Then we’ll have awesomesoup. Pffft.

    dieAntagonista

    Annarchy:
Aw. Ditto. And being put together with nyokki makes me feel all proud also.

Yes I agree with you, but to most people it’s absurd to be vegan and they think it’s impossible to survive like that.

I know for a fact that not every person is built that way, to be healthy on a vegan diet. It’s especially hard without the milk and fish products. It’s hard for the body to get vitamin B12 without those.

For example, I have a neighbour who tried it for a few months. She gained 10 pounds and didn’t feel good at all. Then there’s a lady from Australia I know, she did it for one year, is very toned, her hair stopped falling out and she feels great.

    Sticky

    dieAntagonista:
to quote Lewis Black, “We are like snowflakes. What’s good for one of you will kill the person sitting next to you.”

    Annarchy

    dieAntagonista:
    And awesomesoup is awesome!

Yeah, it’s not for everyone. But I don’t expect everyone to conform to my ideals.

    [x]

    One more vegan here.
I notice that when people talk about meat alternatives and veggie proteins that tempeh usually gets overlooked. It’s delicious just by itself plus it soaks up flavor a lot easier than tofu. I love the stuff!!

    dieAntagonista

    Annarchy:
Indeed. Although I’m a vegan for environmental reasons, mostly. Most people assume that means I’m a hardcore fundamentalist environmentalist and that I think everyone should become vegan. The most difficult part about being vegan is explaining yourself.

    x:
Hooray. Tempeh sounds good. I just discovered it. But I doubt they sell it here.
To be honest I’m not a huge tofu & co fan. I mean they’re good every now and then, but I don’t eat more of it then I ate at any other time.

    Annarchy

    dieAntagonista:
Absolutely. I dread the inevitable: “So…why don’t you eat meat?” And the also inevitable debate over whether fish is meat or not. I just tell them that I don’t want to be party to how animals are treated before they’re killed. I have no issues with people eating meat (used to hunt when I was a kid), but let’s stop pretending that Bessie the cow is not that steak, shall we?

    Sticky

    Annarchy:
    So…why don’t you eat meat?

    …Had to be done. Sorries.

    alblaster

I’m one of them too, a vegan. It’s not hard like people think it is. Anyone can become one. I am not trying to force people to do anything.

    RSIxidor

    dieAntagonista:
    Annarchy:
I dread the inevitable: “Not even chicken? What about pigs? What about (etc)” (unless its done in a hilarious way as in “Everything is Illuminated”)

It is extremely difficult to explain this to some people. Down here in the south, I’ve had friends that actually had people tell them that being vegan is attacking non-vegans way of life. Gah!

    x:
I’ve been meaning to start trying tempeh. My friend says its great.

    dieAntagonista:
When you’re on them for a long time, they can get addictive for awhile, and then start to get boring. I’m actually trying to get more plain old vegetables in my diet, as I am a bit of an oxymoron as a vegan (ie, lack of vegetables and fruit).

    Annarchy

RSIxidor: Ooh, a junk-food vegan! LOL, sorry.

My perfect example of people not getting it: went to visit my parents about a year after I became vegetarian. My mom puts out a plate of cheese, sausage and ham. I tell her I am only eating the cheese and she says: “But it’s not meant, honey. It’s sausage.” My response: “You’re right, mom. Sausage isn’t meat. It’s nipples, lips…” And my dad still asks if I am only eating what his food eats.

    RSIxidor

    Annarchy:
At least your dad tried for humor. Hopefully he isn’t the kind of person that says it in a condescending tone like my hunting since he was a wee lad uncle.

    alblaster

I eat almost anything vegan, although I usually only eat a few things. I lived through my mom’s cooking. I am a lazy vegan. (I either go out, make easy food, or get someone to make me food.)

    Sticky

    alblaster:
I gotta say, there is no such thing as a “lazy vegan.” If I were inclined to become a vegan I’d have a lot of trouble swearing off meat, so that’s a lot of willpower being used.

    MonkeyHitman

wut are you guys best vegan recipes?

    alblaster

for me it’s not much willpower. Sure I used to like hamburgers and stuff, but when you learn about the processes that went into it it’s not as appealing anymore. In the end we eat to live, not live to eat. Food tastes good and gives me pleasure, but it is only temporary pleasure. Is temporary pleasure really worth pain ad suffering in others?

    Sticky

    alblaster:
I eat meat. Its just who I am. It’s hard to live in Kansas and NOT eat meat. I am designed to be an omnivore, and dammit, that’s what I’m going to be. That being said, if you are a vegetarian or vegan and you come to my house for dinner, I shall do my best to accommodate your tastes. However, no recruitment plx.

    nyoki

I am neither a vegan or vegetarian, but I have a lot of trouble w/ most meats so I don’t each much of it. I tried gluten-free at one point, but that was crazy ridiculous for me to hold to, it lasted about 3 months. I can eat chicken, fish and turkey (which I don’t really like) in medium servings 2-3 times a week (1 day on, 1 day off). Beef, lamb and pork is only once in a while (and not w/ potatoes). I eat a lot of beans and rice, stews (cooked w/ meat but don’t actually eat the meat), soups and various pasta dishes. My cast iron stomach abandoned me a few years ago (along w/ my gallbladder).

    alblaster

I hate recruitment as well of any kind, but you always have a choice.

As for vegan recipes I use this one about 3 times a week. Try it even if you aren’t a vegetarian.

    vegan pancakes
    1 1/4 cup flour
    2 tsp baking powder
    1 tsp cinnamon
    1/2 tsp salt
    2 Tbsp vegetable oil
    1/3 cup water
    1 – 1 1/4 soy milk or rice milk
    1 tsp vanilla extract
    2 Tbsp maple syrup

mix dry ingredients, then add wet and mix. Use oil on pan. Cook like regular pancakes. Use more or less flour and milk as necessary. I like to add walnuts and chocolate chips and carob chips. I also like to add 1/2 tsp. nutmeg

    MonkeyHitman

alblaster: never even know that existed.

    alblaster

it’s from a cookbook called “Vegan for Vengeance”

    dieAntagonista

Actually, I don’t think killing animals is cruel. It’s nature. Animals kill each other for food also, why is it wrong if humans, just another kind of animal, do the same?

The real problem is mass production. We kill more than we eat, and we do it in the most horrible ways. Now I have no problem with Joe who has his own farm, a few cows and pigs.
But then you have Tom who is a greedy fucking bastard, and abuses this source to make as much money as possible.

So my point is, Tom sucks. Hard.

    Sticky:

Of all the arguments you could have picked, you picked the one that isn’t true haha. We are not designed to eat meat. We are designed to eat fruits, nuts and vegetables. On the other hand, humans wouldn’t be what they are today, without meat. But technically, the majority of the population could survive perfectly without meat. The only problem is that it’s difficult to get enough protein without meat.

And then there’s the fact that a lot of people consider meat part of their culture, like you said.

Also, I have cooked with meat for friends when they came over. Still do. I’m not a snob or anything.

But yea, food is only fuel, nothing more nothing less. I eat to keep alive, not because it tastes good. And I admit, eating a vegan diet is not very spectacular. But it does feel good, to know that you’re not supporting this system that ruins this planet one bite at a time.

It’s not just us hippies who think that way either.
RSIxidor sent me this link about the German government. They have announced that it would be better if the people were to eat meat just for special occasions, and not every single day.

    rattybad

I have some of that in my fridge and I’ve been too scared to cook with it.

    MonkeyHitman

by the sound of your words i don’t think you should.

    Sticky

    dieAntagonista:
But we are in fact designed to be able to eat both. Incisors, cupids, and bicuspids are designed to tear tough fibrous foods, like a steak. Molars are designed for crushing meat, vegetables, and fruits.

Same goes for our digestive tract. It’s really long to be able to deal with the vegetable part of our diets. One of the reasons cat’s digestive tracts are very short is because they are carnivorous animals, and therefore don’t need as much area to break down a lot of the vegetable components that come with a meal. For instance, tonight, I had stuffed peppers (rice and hamburger topped with tomato sauce) and corn. Meat and vegetables.

    Sticky

    Sticky:
However, I should add that today meat is really no longer required as a part of a diet thanks to creations like tofu and fortified whole grains and whatnot. Meat has pretty much become a luxury item. One that I particularly still enjoy. So yes, in essence, meat is no longer required in today’s society, but it’s one that will endure until the end of time.

    dieAntagonista

    Sticky:

I never said we were not designed to be able to eat both. But we have to cook meat first, which means that there is something missing that would make meat the ideal food.

And about the rest – nonsense. I can refute that with only one argument: humans can survive without meat, but they cannot survive without fruits, nuts and vegetables.

Why is this important? Well, when have cut down all the forests, and ruined the grounds everywhere, we won’t be able to survive. Should the majority of animals die out, we would survive just fine. And with the kind of mass production of meat we have today, it doesn’t look like those ruined grounds and unhealthy environment are too far away anymore.

    dieAntagonista

I commented before I saw your last comment.

“but it’s one that will endure until the end of time”

I doubt that. All it needs for those people who can afford to cut back on the meat is one big horrible event. Which may be closer than one would assume.

Trust me, when people start to feel really threatened, they will learn to survive with little meat way quicker than you would think.

    Sticky

    dieAntagonista:
    I’m not saying I couldn’t survive without meat. I’m sure I could learn to like tofu, I just…don’t. 😛

    dieAntagonista

    Sticky:
Uh, I haven’t eaten any tofu in months. And I’m doing fine. These meat replacement things, are not actually necessary. They just make it easier. And yeah I know, don’t worry. I’m not trying to tell you you should stop eating meat. Just that it’s perfectly normal and natural.

I mean just look at elephants. They’re huge, and they get their protein only from plants. I think these meat replacement foods are just being used to make some more money.

Oh god. Everyone turns into another greedy Tom for me. What is wrong with me.

    Sticky

    dieAntagonista:

    What’s a greedy Tom? O.o
And why aren’t you on AIM so I can bother you instantly?

    dieAntagonista

    Sticky:

Haha, if you read ALL OF my comments you’d know. Here.

I’m sorry I got stuff to do. ):

    Soon. I promise.

    Annarchy

It’s what I realized many years ago – most people don’t know or care where their food comes from. Those same people would have no idea how to kill, skin, gut, dress and prepare an animal to eat. I figure, in case of the zombie apocalypse, I will either become a zombie real quick or watch my fellow humans eating grass while I kill rabbits for food. It’s not the killing that bothers me. It’s the completely unnecessary cruelty to another living being that is giving its life to continue my existence. Also, this disregard for life in general tends to cause conditions that allow for impure (e coli, salmonella, anyone?) product to get out to the general public and harm them. Why would anyone keep cows in such deplorable conditions that they get sick before slaughter and then sell that meat? Ew.

    Sticky

    Annarchy:
Don’t get me wrong, I’d love it if the animals were treated humanely before being served up on my plate, but I figure “humane” is more expensive than “pain and suffering.” It’s all about profit.

psychokrod: Ya neva know what post will start a shitstorm. All in all, yours has been a pretty polite shitstorm.

    MonkeyHitman

nyokki: tiki prevents people from submitting shitstorm topics ever since moldy bible happened.

    nyoki

MonkeyHitman: Why would he do that?

    MonkeyHitman

nyokki: well i could be still be wrong but what i posted is very offensive to the christian religion. it has to do with literalism got rejected, but i kinda anticipated it.

    MonkeyHitman

“with literalism, got rejected but i kinda anticipated it”

    CathyLong

I don’t consider myself a vegan or a vegetarian. I just like food and love trying new things so somedays I eat meat, some not. I never feel like I’m missing out and I never feel guilty either. 🙂

I was raised to see a ‘healthy’ diet as one which was balanced and sampled from every food group.

@dieA: I know where the meat comes from and in many cases of seafood and venisen I killed and cleaned the source myself. I don’t think many meat-eaters are really in denial about the “process” of food, they just don’t care because, to some people, it’s about as worthless as careing about swatting flies. All you have to do is watch food network for one whole day… lol.

    Best point made 😉
    >>insert Dennis Leary Comment here<<

    dieAntagonista

    CathyLong:

Wow. I applaud you. When I was little, I used to help my grandmother kill chickens. It was quite the adventure. But besides that, I’ve never killed anything. Wait, people’s egos don’t count as an animal right?
Oh yeah totally, I know that most people are aware. It’s not about the killing, it’s about what it does to the environment. People still don’t see the connection.

    gx5000:

Thank you good sir. Haha Dennis Leary. What a guy.

    Sticky

    dieAntagonista:
People’s egos count as .5, so you do the math.

Thank you, psychokrod for posting this. And thank you, nyokki, for that link. I love that man.
