…what this is. Found it on a picture-file sweep (filename was a bunch of numbers.) A co-worker suggested it might be some kind of degausser, but image searches turn up nothing resembling it.

looks like a taser but not really just something odd maybe a sensor
March 9, 2009 at 1:11 am
it is a home made taser gun. Those black things are capacitors that get charged up.
March 9, 2009 at 1:13 am
That’s a gauss gun or coilgun, magnets to shoot bb’s.

I would have thought those were c batteries, but yeah, looks like a homemade taser…or possibly professional with the side open.

March 9, 2009 at 1:26 am

The hack-a-day link is correct

This thing is cool. I saw a video once of the guy shooting glass bottles with it. Very effective.

Woo, coilguns!

Man, I was all excited for a mini gausse riffle to pretend Halo with.

Of course, if I had just searched for “gauss” instead of “degauss”…but whatever. Thanks, everyone.
@Blue-fish: This is it –although this little paragraph on the “how it works” page didn’t exactly fill me with confidence:
“The pulse turn-off is the most critical aspect of timing. If any of the magnetic field is still
present after the middle of the projectile passes the midpoint of the coil then the
projectile will experience a “suck-back” effect. Late turn-off could not only slow down the
projectile, it could even cause it to change direction and shoot backwards!”

So what would you use a relatively silent handheld device that shot a single steel projectile (one that’s about the diameter of a .22 round but 3 times the mass, due to its length) at a time?
Assassinating that woodchuck that digs up the vegetable garden at 3am without waking the neighbors?

@HoChunk: Moar Power.

Implement awful pun in 3…2…1
“I’m gonna bust a cap in your ass, sucka!”
or if you prefer:
“Don’t taze me, Bro!”
