I drive by that statue everyday. Surfing is big industry here and they hold big contests just to the right of that statue. Maybe the honor part is for surfers that have died or pioneered the sport in some way. Like a Babe Ruth statue. Who knows
Surfing has been apart of Santa Cruz since before the time of wetsuits and leashes. Santa Cruz has been a surf town for a very long time. There is the industry aspect sure but everyone in this town has tried it once and people come here from all over the world to surf.
