In Vista’s defense we are in the middle of a transition from 32MB to 64MB chip-sets, Vista recognizes this transition by offering both Vista x32/x64, also out there for those who want to preserve there system resources for more worthwhile causes are two settings Basic and Premium.
Minimum system requirements for Basic
800 MHz
Memory 512
Graphics card DirectX 9.0
Graphics memory 32 MB
HDD capacity 20 GB
HDD free space 15 GB
Other drives DVD-ROM
Minimum system requirements for Premium
1 GHz
Memory 1 GB
Graphics card DirectX 9.0 capable
Graphics memory 128 MB
HDD capacity 40 GB
HDD free space 15 GB
Other drives DVD-ROM

Vista set to basic settings can run on even the most basic of paleontologic machines so we can all feel free to change your settings to classic A.K.A. Lame, not enjoy an operating system that recognizes that kick start our graphics card can render, I’m not going to sit there with “system gray” smug look on my face knowing my CPU is running at minimal capacity I prefer the finer A.K.A. optimal things in life…
I’m not saying go open source Linux/Red Hat, I’m just saying there’s a configuration that Vista has provides for you that fits even a Pentium 4 machine very nicely.
I can hardly see your IT team getting upset that you have done away with the premium config on your work station.

You are comparing apples to oranges, actually no, rotten apples to fresh oranges.

You make a good point, what seemed ridiculous back then is common/essential nowadays.

But we’re talking about functionality vs. eye-candy here, mention something, anything, of Vista that has changed in terms of efficiency. Something new, innovative that will most likely pave the way to something more useful and efficient.

You can praise the fade effects and Aero look all you want but in the end they do nothing to render a more enjoyable experience and they do everything to render otherwise perfectly functioning hardware practically useless.

This is all aimed at Vista because I use it at work against my will, not at Windows Seven/Vista 2.0 or whatever you want to call it.

BTW, Vista is also part of NT.

Look at the normal gaming applications and video editing software… the “average” computer user has developed into a more in-depth use for a personal computer. If you don’t like it there are always configurations/platforms that are meant for you, but please don’t think your going to impede progress by embracing efficiency… Mouse support and even the concept of windows seemed like a waste to advanced users back when Windows first launch and look at the compatibility that followed it’s launch.
Maybe one day Google will actually launch their OS system, until than I am all aboard for Windows, and there Beta versions, you are still welcome to complain on your under-indulged Winnebago 2k or NT

@llamamanzero: They are ridiculous because you can get the same eye-candy (and more, way more) on systems like openSuSe with far less expensive hardware. They're hogs, unnecessarily raising specs because they can't optimize their code and shit. I can understand that from a business point of view, because they give hardware companies more sales. It's still paying more for being able to run a GUI with semi-transparent windows. Pfft.

@caffino54 i as well am sick of people slaggin vista for all the “are you sure you want to do this?” pop-ups. Just turn it off. @everyone As far as crashing goes, I know 90% of people don’t know what a windows update is…trust me…i do house calls for computers….get the new SP…or if you have speed issues, don’t run vista on a computer that came with windows ME i recommend atleast a duel core processor and 3g of ram….ok…i’m done

If it’s supposed to be faster, why the hell do the system requirements seem to quadruple?

Sure, its’ all fine and dandy for those of you that have quad-core monsters with 3 video cards and 30 World of Warcraft accounts, what about the casual buyer that doesn’t want to upgrade every frickin’ year and doesn’t care about eye-candy?

Vista is all eye-candy, PLUS a confirmation box for every idiotic action (they call it security, HAH).

Windows 7 looks like yet even more eye-candy PLUS raised system specs, oh and it looks more and more like a fuckin’ Mac GUI.

No thank you sir, I’ll stick with Microsoft’s last decent shot at on OS, Windows XP.

I have loved windows 7 much better than XP which is much better than vista. Too bad the school won’t let me have it on my laptop… I have to run it on a virtual machine instead which doesn’t let you experience all of the goodies. Still very good can’t wait for the release

I’ve been running the Windows 7 beta for a while now. I installed it as a dual-boot, because beta anything makes me nervous, but have been using it almost exclusively ever since. I have a few programs that don’t run quite right, but they were grumpy enough under Vista, so that’s to be expected. I could wax eloquent about it’s awesomeness, but instead I’ll just say thing: I convinced a friend to install it under BootCamp on his MacBook Pro, and he now uses it more than Leopard.
