Global Warming is the new Y2K Scare to dupe idiots out of money. Remember when respected scientists got on TV and told us all that elevators would stop at the wrong floors, jets would fall from the skies, toasters would freeze instead of toasting, power stations would go offline, and all other sorts of shenanigans that never occurred? Same thing with GW/CC. They’ll scare the world into “updating” against something that will never have anything close to the effects they describe.
Yes, “Global Warming” is real and is occurring, but it’s not the boogey-man they make it to be. It won’t cause banks to take all you money or nuclear bombs to go off or jets to fall from the skies… or the climate equivalents of those either.

sure, y2k is a perfect example, because it WOULD have caused all those problems, had people not gone through the pains that they had to in order to fix the underlaying problem code. Did you not see Office Space? Ask around the various code monkey websites, read some information. There were MASSIVE efforts that took place with coding, recoding, testing and retesting. It wasn’t like people were being lied to about Y2K, it’s just that the appropriate response was put into place.

Ug, regardless of whether you believe in it, at least get the concepts involved in the theory right or your refutation won’t make sense! It’s like saying you hate Easter because you don’t want to eat rabbit. It’s not global warming as in your area will get warmer all the time, it’s increased global variability and climate change caused by a slight and gradual over increase in the net total average global temperature. A large, frigid winter storm isn’t evidence against the theory, it is evidence supporting it! Gah! Sometimes it’s like talking to a wall!
On the aside, only -20? I’m in Minneapolis and we were at -14 when I got up this morning. I was expecting Alaska would be significantly worse.
Meanwhile, it’s 80F here in Los Angeles with no end to this heat wave in sight. Not that I’m complaining, mind you. I like it warm (I was born here).
Also, anyone who doesn’t know how climate change can affect civilizations needs to study a bit of history.
Regardless of whether we call our current global weather conditions “Global Warming,” “Climate Change,” or some other moniker, the current efforts to change our global sources of energy from fossil fuels to “clean” sources is a positive for everyone.
Say what you will about turbine farms destroying the view in upstate New York, or endless fields of solar cells carpeting the Mojave Desert, it still beats the hell out of turning the Appalachians into a barren wasteland to get to the coal underneath them.
In addition, the politicization of “global warming” is possibly the worst thing possible to happen to the whole environmentalism thing.
As I said, I grew up in L.A., so I’m used to worshipping famous Hollywood liberals. That said, typically when they get involved in something, their fervor damages that cause.
Global Warming will raise the overall temp of the planet(only 3-4 degrees)… causing the polar ice to melt.. changing the Salinity of the ocean and interrupting the gulf stream current that brings warm tempering water to the north and making NE America/Canada and Europe temperate…and a similar weaker current in the pacific. once that happens…. it’s gonna get really cold… Florida and Mexico(well what’s not sunk) will be the new Wisconsin in the temperature department.

I lol when people think that melting ice caps will raise ocean levels. When Ice melts, it contracts, it shrinks! The ocean levels will go down! People should be cheering! More real estate and new beach front property!

Science 101: Cold = contraction.
Hot = expansion
Steam is steam because the heat speed up the particles, allowing them to dissapate. Cold slows them down, making them bind to each other and cluster closer together.

want an example? Fill up ice cube trays a freeze them. They were brimming with water before now the top of the ice is a few millimetres away from the brim.
Ice caps melting would be bad. VERY VERY bad. almost as bad as the film Waterworld!

But there wouldnt be less beach front. There is still alot of Ice above the water, at least a third that is currently not displacing the water, and also we cant forget the ice tat is held up by land far underneath.

The problem is that there’s all this ice sitting up on land that’s melting into the sea. Not really a huge ‘omg-end-of-the-world’ problem when the floating ice melts, other then the above mention salinity issue, but when all that land locked ice has returned to the sea? that’s when the seas rises.
HOME SWEET HOME. i lived in Anchorage for 20 years.
for several years in the early 80’s, it didn’t snow there. (not very much for Alaska standards) we couldn’t ski to the bottom of Mt Alyeska. in ALASKA. they had to buy snow makers- in ALASKA. in 1990- it snow 115 inches in Anchorage! global warming? what year and where? i think that needs mass more research. yes, things are melting, etc- but other things seem to be getting colder. we just had a record cold/snowfall winter here in Washington.
I’m going to skip the obvious stupidity present here and just simply state that during the last ice age the world temperature was an average of 10 degrees cooler, Fahrenheit. The world average has already gone up 2 in the last century.
Now, you can ignore science when it disagrees with you, and embrace it when it entertains/helps you (computers, automobiles, etc) but that makes you a hypocritical fucktard. Yes, fucktard.

I’m not exactly dumb, but my knowledge of the science being used is strictly undergrad level. I don’t know what the science is saying, really. I can say the way the stats are being used is incorrect, on both sides. They’re both fudging the numbers. It’s not just about whether icebergs melting will cause the seas to rise. It’s all connected in incredibly complex ways. Both sides are guessing and calling the other side out for lying and misrepresenting the data.

I’m an electrical engineer (Class of 89 University of Houston, Cullen College of Engineering), and I can tell you that outside the US and a VERY few other countries, NOBODY updated for Y2K. Most countries couldn’t afford to. NOTHING happened. Not even in countries where NO EFFORT AT ALL was made to prepare. I laughed my ass off because I told everyone they were wasting their time and money, and I was proven right. I won a LOT of money off Y2K in betting pools. People have worked hard to forget that most of the world didn’t do a damn thing as it allows them forget what idiots they were then… and GW/CC will be NO DIFFERENT AT ALL.
