I didn’t know quite how close the Nazi U-Boat fleet was to the United States during WWII. It’s quite remarkable how well the axis powers utilised the technology available to them.
On a side note, I was lucky enough to have a look around U-434, a diesel-powered Soviet spy sub, while I was in Hamburg, Germany last August. Apologies for the less than ideal link, but it’s worth a look. This submarine was in service until the year 2000 if I remember correctly. Inside it looks like something from Bioshock. I can’t believe good patriotic men were sent to sea in something so outdated and decrepit.
