Schmidt 01 500x378 Helmut Schmidt

Today (Dec 23rd) is his 90th birthday. He was Federal Germany’s Secretary of Defence from ’69 – ’72, Secretary of Treasury from ’72 – ’74 and Federal Chancellor from ’74 – ’82. He was also the co-founder of what is the G8 today. Not politically active anymore, he still is one of Germany’s most popular politicians. The pictures were taken (1) in the early 70′s, (2) 1974 and (3) 2001.

  1. Aww yeah. Good ole Schmidt. He’s the man.

  2. He’s a 90 year old smoker and hasn’t kicked the bucket from lung cancer yet?
Has the Surgeon General has been lying to us?

  3. I’ve been wondering, too. But then I heard a few weeks ago that he has a pace maker since 1981.

  4. Okay, that doesn’t say anything about lung cancer but at least his heart won’t stop all of a sudden ;)

  5. Hes a german, he has too much determination to let some little pissant like lung cancer stand in his way

  6. First pic looks like Dexter’s Dad, Harry.
