If gay marriage is illegal, then why is divorce legal.
Or why is it legal for two atheists to get married.

1. Religions don’t try for consistency.
2. Religious zealots (who are are the most likely to speak against gay marriage) feel even less need to be consistent.
3. They’re assholes.

Especially your first point is the most outrageous one.

And I’d also like to add, that these people simply don’t want to give up that power they have over others.
Much like with abortion. They don’t care about people’s lives. If they did, they wouldn’t go so willingly to war with other countries. Or actually care about the babies after they are born.

Basically correct.

They’ll fight whatever they can, and then when they don’t get there way, they find a way to make it okay and continue on conforming (without letting the most offending aspects from entering their religious circle).
