I’d say it’s too early to tell. It’s a summer release, so the preview for it is bound to have all the action bits rolled into a two minute ad. You could do the same thing with Wrath of Khan, it’s all in the editing. As long as it has some character development, decent cast chemistry and some thought provoking hooks, it won’t be a flop.

I mean really. Can it be worse than V, or Nemesis?

Well, I like it. I think the new insignia looks cool... @nyokki: Have watched ST since the original, never watched Alias, Fringe, or Lost. No regrets. Especially seeing how Lost sounds like they ran out of material and soapy... @Camiam321: Cloverfield wasn't that bad, but I think it seemed to me like the movie originally started off as a romance flick, and then someone had the great idea of throwing in an invincible Godzilla-like monster and a bunch of minions to somehow spice up the plot... I dunno about everybody else, but when I go to see a monster flick, I'd like a little more focus on the actual monster...

As far as the new trailer goes, I hope it is evidence that they are cherishing what works about Trek, and still reworking the formula enough for it to feel fresh without bastardizing the source material too much.

Cloverfield was alright at best. The characters were garbage, but the execution of the monsters was well thought out. No one cares about a love-struck yuppie larva who thinks he knows what love is and is willing to prove it by backtracking through a DMZ to save his lovergirl. CRAP. Hubby watched Alias, I didn’t (even though Garner was homegrown here). I like Fringe, enough to check out a 2nd season. I stopped watching Lost less than half-way through the first season…Soap Opera. I’ve loved Star Trek, since it first aired and will watch anything Star Trek, no matter how bad. I do have hopes for this one, buy am not expecting to love it.

@LukeV1-5: Its getting better damnit. I'm expecting the upcoming season to be good. Come on, don't destory my hopes! There was a love triangle very early on in the seasons (Sawyer-Kate-Jack). I think what they did at the end of last season (hell, I actually liked most of last season) was absolutely great.

Lost was good for the first couple of seasons. You know, when it was awesome, and there were polar bears running around the place, and all sorts of crazy stuff going on. That was cool.

But then it got all sentimental, and normal. It was like “Yeah, we may be on an island, BUT, more importantly, Love Triangle!”.

I don’t want no triangles of love.

I want a triangle involving intrigue and mischief.

Well Tiki, I’ve never seen Alias, but almost every Bad Robot product quickly hit my favorites list.
Certainly, the trailer indicates that the film will be very different from the Star Trek we all know, which is probably the only way it could be a success. The old Star Trek formula isn’t going to sell anymore.

Lost is only a mess if you don’t watch every
episode in order. Its like falling asleep for a big chunk of a movie, of course it doesn’t make sense when you wake up.
If you want ‘Casual’ viewing, then i’m sure there is a Wayans Brothers sitcom playing at any given moment.

I found Cloverfield immensely gratifying,
but ‘Fringe’ is still on my ‘action item’ list.

I didn’t watch Alias. Lost is getting better now that they have a scheduled ending date. Cloverfield was fun, but definitely not great. Fringe is not a flop, its actually not horrible, but they need to work on presentation and cleaning things up (especially the science). Its getting a full season at the least. MI:3 was great.

I have high hopes for this movie. I don’t expect it to feel like anything Star Trek has ever done before, and that’s exactly what the franchise needs.

The fact is – even if its dead – it will stick around. The franchise is big enough to keep throwing stuff out there every few years after this and that fails. Hopefully this will succeed greatly and will be wonderful and make everyone happy, and will spawn a new series of good Star Trek adventures. *crosses fingers*
