I believe this is a pretty old system; I remember reading about this in Air & Space magazine back in the 90s.

Airplane + flying = win
Airplane + parachute = fail
@Avias:
Airplane + mechanical problem + no suitable landing spot in glide range + parachute = win, and pretty much any pilot will agree. A soft vertical drop will always be preferable over a crash landing on rough terrain.
