   @rebelyell

   The US Armed Forces (usually Navy) would dump surplus stuff into the ocean to ease our economy out of wartime production, since immediately cutting off wartime industries would throw the country back into the Great Depression. So instead, they tapered off production and either sold or threw away the surplus goods.
