In line 8′s were really common and they figured the larger the engine/pistons the more horsepower. The only problem is that the horsepower not only have to fight the weight of the chassis but also the engine block itself.

Engine technology in 1931 was not what it is now.

But I think this had more to do with “Mine is bigger than yours” attitude.

the engine is a 12.7l straight 8.

Only 6 were produced and they still exist.

One of those sold in 1991 for US$ 8,000,000.
