This has been bugging me for a while. Is there a technical term for that section of barrel that has a larger diameter than the rest of the barrel?

The oversized barrel section is called the fume ejector.
Nice row of Merkava IV’s..
sort of odd the IDF having tank marks paralleling the Germans though..

I’m wondering what the devices on the front of that one tank are for. My first thought was putting pressure on the ground in front to trigger any mines before the tank is on top of them. Anyone know for sure?

@hvymetal86: it’s to hold the enemy down before running them over.

At first I thought that was a lone mech standing against all those tanks.

The larger section of the barrel is called a bore evacuator not a fume ejector (unless that is what they call it in Europe) its designed to hold gasses created from the exploding of the gun powder and expell them from the end of the barrel after the round has left it so the gasses dont back up into the turret of the tank.
