Illustration of the Ptolemaic geocentric model of the Universe (the theory that the Earth is the center of the universe) by Portuguese cosmographer and cartographer Bartolomeu Velho. Taken from his treatise Cosmographia, made in Paris, 1568. Notice the distances of the bodies to the centre of the Earth (left) and the times of revolution, in years (right).

if the universe is infinite, then any point can be the center

    suicydking

I thought about that back in my youth, nate. if you’re in an infinite space, then you are always equidistant from the edges, right?

    the3g_ipwn

    What edges?

    Sarcastastic

It’s not the universe it’s talking about here, it’s the planets and the sun rotating around the Earth that is being claimed here. We now known this to be untrue.

Fifteen hundred years ago, everybody “knew” that the earth was the center of the universe. 500 years ago, everybody “knew” that the earth was flat. And 15 minutes ago, you “knew” that humans were alone on this planet. Imagine what you’ll “know” tomorrow. ~ Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones)

if the earth is the center of the universe, then everything revolves around it

    Yuri

If the universe is infinite, there’s no center, because you can’t measure it with any edges

    Cargen

There is a center but no edges, simply because some of the matter it shot out was more dense than others, thus taking more time to slow down. But The point in which it shot out is the center of the known universe, but as far as we know there may be countless other sub universes inside our plain of reality, the darkness outside of our “universe” may hold more “Universe’s” and if so, there might be no way to get to it ever. even if we could go 100000X faster the speed of light

the3g_ipwn: That quote alone from that kick ass movie is more than enough to pwn the shit out of any religion.

    deuce

This is what Christians actually believe! (I’m off by about 500 years, but if you average it all out I’m still right)

    the3g_ipwn:

500 years ago, they knew the world was round. Hell, they knew about it LONG before 500 years ago. In fact, the catholic church gave the “round Earth” theory the official Papal Seal of Approval in 1491… which is more than 500 years ago. The idea that people though the Earth was flat 500 years ago is that stupid notion in bad high school history books that claimed Columbus was trying to prove the world was round when he sailed to the New World in 1492. It’s laughable that some people still believe that. 😀

Dreth: do you really think MIB was a kick ass movie?

    Dreth

I do, regardless of the hate for Will Smith involved in the community. The concept was cool, it made me laugh a few times and that quote alone (from above) just made me go “OOOOOOH damn!”.

    the3g_ipwn

NoOneInParticular: I guess 517 years doesn’t have the same ring to it. That’s WAY more than 500 though. Jackass.

    NoOneInParticular:

HOW did they know the Earth was round? And do you think that because some self-righteous elitists pass it as “official” everyone else is going to believe it? Not everyone in the Old World was catholic.
