The Romans (at least during the reign of the Caesars)displayed and near-worshiped both the penis and the vulva in public life. Over the doors of many public buildings and private shops had what we would certainly consider NSFW and much of it was outright porn. This would be displayed where young children could see it and some of the wedding traditions would make us blush (all of us). Almost anyone would have been able to buy nearly any kind of sex toy.

If I remember right, ancient Egyptian myth had Osiris cut into pieces by one of his brothers and scattered around and about until Isis could find all the pieces and put him back together… except a fish ate his penis, so she made an artificial one and the Egyptians then had a festival in celebration of it every year.

If you’re going to pray to the god of something, it might as well be a penis.
