Kind of looks like a jewel spider, but – I can’t tell from the glare but the abdomen looks too round.
Where did you see this? I bet I know what family it is and could look it up if I could narrow it down by place.

Isn’t that just an especially plump orb weaver? I see those all over near my house.

Beautiful specimen, by the way. I love spiders.
Here’s the orb weaver wiki.

Also, it appears that the jewel spiders that Caio mentioned are from the family I linked. I don’t think that’s an Ozzy spider though, as I have seen plenty in Western New York state. Jewel spiders are Australian.

Thanks, Caio.
The North American jewel spider link was great. The two spiders shown in the smaller images look like some that I’ve seen around my neighborhood also. In fact, my son & I saw a big plump one like those. It was sitting on a tree, just chillin. My son poked it because he thought it was some kind of a nut stuck to the tree. The spider didn’t seem to mind much, and I went back home to grab my camera.

The Ozzy jewel looks amazing. I would love to see one up close!

Yup, that’s it. Nice pic, too, very well aligned.
Yeah, I love Jewel Spiders. They live all over the outside of my porch so whenever I smoke watch them through the plastic. They have all kinds of yellow/black (and sometimes blue and red) patterns depending on where their hiding places are. Fascinating little things.

My wife found one on the porch the other day and just about shit kittens. Gorgeous looking arachnid and pretty docile. She wanted to kill it but I just let it crawl into my palm and moved it across the street.

Golden Orb Weavers (Banana Spiders) are the best though… HUGE and will eat a Cadillac if it gets stuck in the web..

As much as I HATE spiders and want to see them all die, this site is prety interesting: www.whatsthatbug.com
Bugman knows his shit and could identify anything with 6 or more legs.

even tho it’s been ID’d, this is in Northern Virginia. My apartment backs up to a huge drainage pond, and we have big sodium lights on the side of the building, so there are TONS of bugs near my deck, which means tons of spiders. We share space peacefully provided they (a) stay outside and (b) don’t make webs across the door. There is nothing worse then going out for a smoke at 3 am and getting snared.
I’ve got a few more spider shots at the end of this set: flickr.com/photos/silveroh2ohz/sets/72157604000081706/
