Stereotypically, one might look at that photo and see a bunch a wealthy white guys who you’d think are, in some way, racists… but to do something that they didn’t have to do, to do the right thing, gives one hope for humanity. Of course the Democrats opposed it. This was the exact moment when the parties switched positions on civil rights. For hundred years, the South voted straight Democrat because they were still pissed off at Lincoln (Republican). When LBJ (Democrat) signed the Civil Rights Act, he said “We have lost the South for a generation.” In the next election, 1968, Nixon jumped at the chance to get the Southern votes by taking an anti-Civil Right platform. That’s how the Republicans went from being the Party of Lincoln to being the party of angry rednecks.
