I thought it was a subtle reference to the fact that the Easter Island people ended up destroying their ecosystem to build those statues and they ended up dieing of starvation.

I thought that their ecosystem was destroyed because of overpopulation, with the stone heads being the only thing that remained untouched.

If I recall correctly, Easter Islanders made a pretty good civilization, but grew too big for the island. Unfortunately, they’d cut down all the trees, didn’t leave any to plant and grow and get moar. No trees, no canoes or ships or etc to leave the island.
