Burj Dubai (“Dubai Tower”) is a skyscraper under construction in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and is the tallest man-made structure on Earth. Construction began on September 21, 2004, and it is expected to be completed and ready for occupation in September 2009.[1]

The building is part of the 2 km² (0.8 sq mi) development called ‘Downtown Dubai’ and is located at the “First Interchange” (aka “Defence Roundabout”) along Sheikh Zayed Road at Doha Street. The tower’s architect is Adrian Smith[4] who worked with Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) until 2006.[5] SOM is the architecture and engineering firm in charge of the project.[4] The primary builders are Samsung Engineering & Construction and Besix along with Arabtec.[6] Turner Construction Company was chosen as the construction manager.[7]

The total budget for the Burj Dubai project is about US$4.1 billion and for the entire new ‘Downtown Dubai’, US$20 billion. Mohamed Ali Alabbar, the CEO of Emaar Properties, speaking at the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat 8th World Congress, said that the price of office space at Burj Dubai had reached $4,000 per sq ft and that the Armani Residences, also in Burj Dubai, were selling for $3,500 per sq ft.[8]

I’m not impressed. Producing the tallest building in the world when you have butt loads of cash is meaningless. Whereas when New Yorkers built not only the Empire State Building, but the Chrysler building as well, both at the same time – during the great depression – now that’s something!

What’s amazing about Dubai is how many of their buildings are built by slave labor and indentured servitude.

The best part of this thread is the “freedom tower” in the illustration of comparative size. They haven’t even poured the foundation for that monstrosity. Skyscrapers, while beautiful (usually)are inefficient and expensive, which is why Sears moved out of the Sears Tower and why so many have so much vacant space.

I will not be impressed until it has a flaming Eye of Sauron on top of it.

Hey… is it possible to simply walk into Dubai, or does one not do that?

Fuck who needs a space program when you can pay your citizens 1 buck an hour to build you a big metal cock?

UAE will impress me when for the first time in their documented existence they do something other than jerk themselves off with money.

Oh and are Imperial Guards (women) allowed int these buildings?

Like the Arabs care about how efficient the buildings are… as long as dumb US and Euro gringos keep buying them up… This is their panic measure.. because they just figured out…”Oh Crap… we gonna run out of oil”. May the sands swallow your city whole…

And yet, we can’t seem to build a simple space elevator. Just dumb. And before any of you idiots post a smart ass reply, the space elevator is a real project, idiot.

Yeah, the space elevator is a real project, but it is anything but simple.

No mention of the CN tower in Toronto?
I thought that was the tallest.
I agree that skyscrapers are boring, but I like the idea of making our mark using epic feats of construction. Lots of Ancient cultures stamped the world with mega-engineering. If I were a slave, I’d prefer to be involved in a project like this.

Vain attempt to show the world they can be something other than a basically undeveloped but oil soaked strip of sand.
