Entertainment Weekly magazine just named Tetris as the number one videogame of the last 25 years. Agree/disagree?

The top 5:

1. Tetris - PC (1985)

2. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - N64 (1998)

3. Doom - PC (1993)

4. Super Mario World - SNES (1991)

5. Guitar Hero - PS2 (2005)

And the rest of the top 50:

    I’m inclined to agree.

They put “Super puzzle fighter II” which i’ve never heard of but didn’t include any diablo games?

I guess it would depend on the criteria you use to achieve your ranking. I can see tetris as #1. Shit, even my wife plays it.

i agree that a game like Guitar Hero should be considered good based on fun-factor, being a group game, and being an original game…

…but isn’t there another game that could be #5?

and i’m sorry, but GTA IV does not deserve the high rating that it got. San Andreas is easily the best game in the series so far. there was so much less content in IV than the other games. i can understand why people love it so much, but i have to be honest with myself. San Andreas was superior

I agree with Carniarn… also, Zelda III for SNES >> Zelda 64.

And I’d rate Super Mario World higher than all others here.

I like Doom. I still play it!

How is Doom not #1? After reading the book “Masters of Doom” I believe it deserves it. How is Quake not on the list?

I think that its total crap. and I disagree in almost every context. I mean so what that the title single handedly help established the gameboy!?! there is no point to the game, no story, no innovation, no fancy hook, no graphics whatsoever! THEY ARE FREAKING BLOCKS!! There were many other games that helped launch consoles, were killer apps, and went on to spawn several sequels and make millions. Tetris has been reduced to a bargain bin game and something you play on your cell phone when you are taking a shit…

What, no Mass Effect? Slick interface, well-written story/characters, incredibly adaptable?

    No?

Id bump Super Mario on NES to #1 and Doom to #2. Tetris maybe #3.

I hate to admit it but I think the original Halo should be up there. It was probably the first “next-gen” shooters I couldn’t put down.

I kind of agree with this list.

I’d have to agree that Tetris is a bit high on the list though.

Hmm. In terms of what they’ve done for gaming as opposed to, say, gameplay, replay value, fun, etc? My list.
    1. Pac-Man
    2. Super Mario
    5. Tetris
    4. Doom
    5. Final Fantasy VII
    6. Starcraft

sooo, guitar hero should defineatly not be inthe top five. Stupid, horrible mistake. Not in the top 10, or 20. Eh, maybe 20.

Tetris and Doom belong on the top 5. They defined a whole new genre of games. (Ok, there were FPS games like Wolfenstein before Doom but Doom was so much more advanced that it takes their place). Guitar Hero earns it’s spot with same merits and also being about the first ever game a teenage boy can play with his father without being completely embarrassed.

What about WoW? It is the definition of MMORPG and has sparked an industry around the game play. It deserves a spot in top 5 more than some random episodes in a Nintendo franchise that spans over 30 games.

That fills 4 slots from our top 5. That leaves one spot for the most played game ever: Windows Solitaire.

So my top 5 would be:

    1. Tetris
    2. Doom
    2. WoW
    2. Solitaire
    2. Guitar Hero

Guys, guys, you don’t get it.

This was made not by a nerdy gaming magazine that would have been closer to what you might think.

It was made by Entertainment Weekly. How could they know how to do this correctly when they’re typical article is about Hollywood whores and their little dogs?

To save any real gamers from looking at the whole list:

    Half Life is #18.
    Super Mario Galaxy is #12.

    I rest my case.

Wait, wait, Deus Ex is #23¬!?
    OH NO YOU DIDN’T!!

tetris is the best game ever. how many people play tetris on their cell phones, ipods, calculators. tetris was the main reason the gameboy sold so well.

  23. IAMBATMAN (UID#1000) on July 5th, 2008 5:12 pm Reply to this comment

yeah. Tetris deserves 1 but Goldeneye 007 should be atleast in the top 5. and for those who say they still play doom check out http://www.skulltag.com for an online version of doom that has many players.
and @RPTM6 I still play the Gameboy version of Tetris with my SP :)

I hate when anyone tries to put ranked numbers beside something so subjective. I love and enjoyed playing all these games… but I wouldn’t dare try to rate them through thirty years of changing technology and gaming paradigms. I’d much prefer an unrated top 50?
However, according to impact, Tetris got EVERYONE playing video games. It changed the face of the industry. You still see the game everywhere, and its still a great way to waste time. The author likely had that in mind.
