Extreme Home Protection

this is my friend’s, (DHG), AR-15 Assualt Rifle he picked up a couple months ago. As you can see, it has some pretty good tactical equipment on it and it is laying on top of a plate carrier with multicam MOLLE gear pouches.

    2. Are they still called AR-15s if they have the M4 conversion done? Or was that purchased like that?

    3. @Angrymatt

Yes, they are still AR-15s if they have the retractabnle stock. The difference between an AR-15 & M4 is barrel length. The 15 has a 20″ barrel and the M4 has a 16″ barrel.

This *looks* to be an AR-15A3 as the 16″ barrel usually has a little narrow spot & I don’t see one here.

The M4 has a 14.5 inch barrel and the cutout on the barrel for the M203 grenade launcher. This is a standard AR-15A3 with 16″ non-m4 barrel.

    6. Well, yeah, it’s a good gun. I see it has one of those long things, a barrel or somesuch. And a looking glass, and a clip-containing device. Is that a lantern I see?

This gun is entirely unnecessary. By the time he hefts it into his underworked shoulder, jerks off over it, and works up the balls to actually confront someone instead of cowering under his bed, an intruder will have carved an apology into his chest.

Real men get the .223 for zombie invasions because the ballistics of that lighter round will make is go through the skull but not out the other side, bouncing around like a golfball in a raquetball court scrambling the brains.

      Well, aren’t you a fucktard…

I’ll accept the 14.5″ barrel comment as Iwas only ever issued full 16s and only got to fire a 203 in basic because I had an IQ high enough to have an MOS other than 11B.

But if you bother to carefully read my comment, I did peg it as an AR-15A3.

    11. The weapon was designed as a “Katrina” gun not as an instant home defence weapon. The gun is a Panther DPMS model a4 chambered in .223, it has a 16″ barrel. It has a 3-point tactical sling, and a streamlight flashlight with a CAA quick detach mount, with a streamlight pressure switch. The forehand grip is also from CAA. Again the i built the rifle not for immediate self-defense but for a “Katrina” hurricane like situation in which law and order have collasped. For home defense I have a thompson submachine gun chambered in .45 cal. which has far superior terminal ballistics in the short range.

You really want a high powered assault rifle for home defense? That’s pretty irresponsible. That’s a good way to shoot somebody you didn’t mean to and/or cause some good property damage after your errant rounds go through a few walls.

    16. Move that forend grip further out, its more stable. That tape switch on the 1913 adaptor looks wild, never seen anything like that before.

And a thompson doesn’t have far superior ballistics is short range. But frankly at home defense ranges, anything in the .380 and up range is gonna be enough, its all about shot placement. A .22 to the tear duct is gonna do a whole lot more damage than a .45 to the shoulder.

There are plenty of rounds available for the .223/5.56 cartridges that will not go through two pieces of drywall, whereas only frangible pistol cartridges have a chance at not doing that.

But really the thing that makes gun more appropriate for zombies than home invaders is the ACOG looking optic on top. A red dot sight on top would be far superior than an ACOG at conversation range, thanks to the red dots having no magnification and unlimited parallax.

You may want to try something like a “redi mag” vs that magazine clamp youve got.

I didnt say the .45 cal had better ballistics, I said it had better terminal ballistics at short range, which is an indication of how much damage it does based on the amount of energy it is transfering to the target. The .45 APC round is one of the best man stopper ever produced. As for the second part of your comment you are partially correct, there used to be lots of frangible rounds in .223, however LE sector has basically sucked up all the supply. I also have a red dot, but as I described in an earlier post the weapon is designed as a tactically flexible weapon meant to deal with a Katrina scenrio.

Maybe people who are so afraid of their own inferiority and socially intellectual ineptitude should stop CLAIMING their guns are for anything else. I love the freedom of gun ownership. In modern hollowpoint rounds a 9mm, .40 cal, .45 is all the same. The .223 does more damage at close range to living tissue than any of those rounds.

As for the second part of your comment you are partially correct, there used to be lots of frangible rounds in .223, however LE sector has basically sucked up all the supply.

Frangible arent the only ones in the .223 man. PLENTY of other loads will. I recommend Hornady TAP, 55gr loads are probably the best.

I also have a red dot, but as I described in an earlier post the weapon is designed as a tactically flexible weapon meant to deal with a Katrina scenrio.

Your thompson is nice piece of history, but as a HD gun it is severely outclassed by many modern weapons, your AR being one of them. Your .45 will overpenetrate, hard to mount a light or an optic on.

      Reply

    31. Actually nimbo at close range the .223 has some problems because the barrel twist has been dramtically increased. During the vietnam war, it was 1:6, now it is 1:9 this has improved accuracy but all but reduced the famous tumbly (end over end) effect the .223 used to make at close range. It still has a tendacy at medium ranges but at close range it has been compared to a flying ice pick, going way to fast through targets and not transfering much energy to the target. Now tests have shown at medium and long ranges the round will also “yaw” which produces odd shaped wounds. I stand by my comments about the .45 cal. The round was created to deal with drug addled Philipeono (sic) insurgents in the early 20th century. Traditional .380 smith and wesson revlovers were not stopping them thats why the army created the .45 to put people down and keep them down. While modern hollowpoints (I use .45 hollowpoints) have dramatically increased the damage to scare tissue they dont increase the amount of energy that is transfered to a target this is a crucial aspect. The key to the .45 is its dramatically increased weight over rounds like the .38, 9mm, or .40 SW.

Look, an assault rifle is a POOR choice for civilian home defense. The response of “oh well” to killing/injuring somebody who had nothing to do with what’s going on in your house is pretty fucking stupid. Insisting that you absolutely *HAVE* to use an assault rifle pretty much proves that you have some severe compensation issues and you just want a rifle like that so you can look like a “badass.” Grow up.

And as for the ballistics debate – how about you just buy the caliber that you feel works best for your particular situation.

If you get this worked up just discussing the merits of your favorite weapon/round then I’m betting that you’ll probably end up shooting yourself in the foot if you ever have to confront a bad guy in the middle of the night.

Actually i consider people who debate ballistics and the merits of different firearms to be an indication that they are capable, experianced and not likely to shoot themselves in the foot in the middle of night at the first sign of a disturbance.

      @lukeV1-5

Your dismissal of different caliburs as “its a bullet. hitting someone” to be a really good indication of your total lack of knowledge when it comes to firearms, which in its self is not a bad thing, but maybe it would be a good idea for you to stick to topics that concern: bareknuckle fighting, hauling lumber and sanding objects. Go with your strengths!

Now YOU listen, just because you saw a 2 min. clip of these ‘race wars’ on the news does NOT mean that you know enough about it to judge MY country on it (lol can you even point out Cronulla on a map?)- it was a boiling point that was a long time coming- these people disrespected women on the beach wearing bikinis and beat the crap out of a lifeguard- and the other group was a bunch of disgruntled, drunken fools that let themselves be manipulated by a few racist tools. People in Australia don’t have a problem with muslims OR Lebanese Australians, no matter what the media try to say- however there is a horrible sub-culture in a lot of Lebanese youth (mostly men) that think it’s ok to treat women like meat, which is fuelling another terrible sub-culture in ‘white’ australian men that all ‘wogs’ are bad. All i was saying by that was that i agreed with some of the comments, so how about YOU stop being intolerant.

So I dont think OZ is racist but it is not the liberal utopia it likes to think it is, and many of the actions taken by aussies in their daily lives is an indication that their has not been a modern civil rights movement (I heard continious and numerous racial ephitats shouted at an essendon footie match).

And by modern civil rights movement I guess I am imagining something akin to the American movement which lasted for decades was highly visible, produced iconic leaders like MLK, and dramatically improved the lives of minorities. Then again Australia has a much smaller minority population than the states. I experianced a similar if but much worse situation while living in England, as the “n’ word was tossed around pretty freely at any pub I went into that had a soccer match on the tele
