its quite simple actually. i mean, as everyone said, you only need a tank they cant escape from.

basically, on all of the filters that lead into and out of the tank, put strong and small grates.

also, put a heavy heavy lid on the tank that covers every centimeter of the top, and have it lock.

otherwise uh, itll escape and start playing with your cat or dog.

They're crazy. there was an aquarium that kept having expensive fish dissappear, they set up cameras and found that an octopus was walking across the hallway, out of its tank, and eating them.

A friend of mine had an octopus when she was younger. She said they could put their hands into the tank and play with it, and it was intelligent.

She told me this story, about how a lawyer or something was visiting their house, and was peering into the tank to see what was in it, and then out of nowhere the octopus flew out of it's hiding place into the man's face, which was inches from the glass. Scared the shit out of him. =D

As FlyingMantisShrimp stated, blue rings are a BAD idea. They are beautiful though, but one bite can kill and it is a nasty way to go.

Steelfeather is right. Octopuses are notorious for escaping tanks. If their beak can fit through a crack, then they can squish their hole body through.

They are quite intelligent and require stimuli so they don't get bored. This is why many people train them to open jars to get crabs or put floating toys in their tanks.

Actually, if you do research on keeping them as pets - you'll find the trickeist part is making it so they can't escape!

I want one myself, but I don't have the patience to maintain a saltwater tank.

You could always get a blue ring octopus. They look awesome....but, then again, they could kill you pretty easily.

What sort of critters you got in your tank?
