I believe the shit hook is still the fastest american rotary winged aircraft. I've heard interviews with Apache and Crash Hawk pilots that have said that its a bit embarrasing to have to ask the shit hook pilot to slow down so you can keep up with it in your sleek state of the art Apache.

Alpha, if your story is true, then I'm sorry for your loss. But the fact is, you could look up any vehicle ever used by the military, be it airborne, on land, at sea, etc, and you'd be able to find a list of crashes.

I've gotten to ride in a few Chinooks, and they're not bad. The Chinook has been the bigger workhorse bird of the U.S. military since its inception, and it's proven itself worthy of the designation far more often than not.

Alpha, you referring to the Blackhawk or the Chinook? I've heard the Chinook called a "shit hook", but never a "shit hawk". My dad flew the A and B models back in 67-69 and loved 'em.

Awesome history site on the CH-47:

You're completely right. Chinooks fail all the time, and that's why they're used so much by so many militaries.

They're still actively used in the British Armed Forces as well, and fail. Both spectacularly and regularly
