I always give out a hearty laugh when people check to make sure the chain is locked on their front doors. Really, does it do anything to prevent people from kicking the door in? Nope. nothing at all!

While it won’t protect against brutes like the perpetrator who initiated this attack, they should help against those who only know the credit card trick.

Yeah, it’s loud and noisy to kick a door in. People are less likely to do that than try to pick a lock or something.

It protects you from not getting your lost shit paid for by your insurance company.
@Caio
Ever tried to pick a lock? It’s horrid. It’s like trying to jack off a hummingbird.
Best way? Try the next door and hope it was left open.

@ Magnus: “…like trying to jack off a hummingbird”? Christ, that’s the funniest thing I’ve heard in a long time! Thank you!

Magnus: Most burglarized homes leave the front door wide fucking open.

You can’t bumpkey a chain lock.
*shrugs*
I have a reinforced metal doorframe. Should make kicking it in a bit harder.

I rarely lock my doors unless I know I’m gonna be gone for awhile… I don’t have anything worth stealing – stuff of personal value, that’s it.

FWIW, anecdotal evidence, but chains on doors were not meant to be a break-in deterrent; they were made to keep small children from opening a door and escaping the house, which is why in very old houses you see them up near the top of the door.
