      i bet they are just tubing and knee boarding.

      I’ll bet anyone trying to land on that carrier is currently shitting his/her flight suit :P

      Maverick could do it. No sweat.

      That’ll void their warranty.

      @ DemoGeek

      That meme is a little more obsure than most, but it’s one of my favorites.

      The airwing is not onboard when they do high-speed turns, so no Maverick. Although, from the looks of the flight deck, the airwing had been aboard recently.

      BTW, if you look off to the left you can see the ship’s wake. Carriers can actually make fairly tight turns, given their length.

      FWIW, the ship is USS RONALD REAGAN.

      Saw it in San Diego a few years ago, but only from a distance. It had just been commissioned.

      This is reminds me when i was playing Forgotten Hope and I’ve crashed a battleship into a aircraft carrier. Good times.

      I’m joining the Navy here soon, and being the 3rd Gen Progeny of a Navy Family I can tell you that 1. It’s a high speed tight turn, like a ship’s bootleg or “J” turn. If it had a handbreak, the Quartermaster would be pulling it to perform this. 2) Nothing is taking off or landing on that thing anytime soon and C. I went onboard the Reagan a few years back. It is literally a floating city, with a fully-functioning hospital, water treament plant, recycling center, gigant-o-normous home theatre system on every deck, and enough room and board for just over 3000 people. And a kitchen big enough to feed them all.

      AND AN ARCADE! DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW HARD IT IS TO PLAY PINBALL WITH THE SHIP RISING AND FALLING 50 FEET EACH WAY FROM OCEAN SWELLS? It’s awesome though. You can go into the ladder wells, let go of the ladder when the ship drops from a swell and fly up four decks. Reverse for when the ship rises on a swell.

      @Demo:
      Why are we joining the Navy?

      As sappy as it sounds, I’m a patriot. I am willing to fight for the Freedoms every American loves but won’t get off their couches for. Also, the lure of free world travel, job security, military education, pay and benefits and etc doesn’t hurt at all. AND for the stories I can keep til I have a lap full of empty-headed grandkids. It’s all here in my MySpace lol.

      Good job Demo, don’t let the cynism and apathy of those wasteoids stop you from doing what you feel is right. I spent 20 years as a Navy Combat Search and Rescue aircrewman and Rescue Swimmer, went to over 30 countries and never once regretted it. Good Luck!

    15. Vote -1 Vote +1reboot (UID#436)

      heh. Free world travel, job security, education are all reasons that I decided to go into academia. Not being judgmental, I just thought it was funny that the same reasons would inspire two people to go into two completely different fields.
      OTOH, I despise being ordered around, so I think its a good choice for me.

      @Demo:
      It doesn’t sound sappy. I may not agree with your decision or the politics that underly it, but I do respect the thought you’ve put into it and your right to choose what you would for yourself. Good luck.

      Many people have a misconception about modern military life. Being “ordered around” is not what it seems like in the movies or tv, I rarely got ordered and when I became a supervisor I rarely had to order people around, because everyone knew what job had to get done and they got it done, I think it has to do with higher motivation and intelligence found in the civilian world and being in an all volunteer force.

      In fact, now that I work in the private sector I see people getting much more ordered around they I ever did in the military, I guess because in the civilian world they can fire you almost at will, in the military too much training and money has gone into the service members to treat them like crap. Of course you can always find some service member is not happy, but you find people like that everywhere.

      I now drawn a nice pension (I’m in my 40’s), my family and I has unlimited health care and I actually feel like I earned my freedoms.

    18. Vote -1 Vote +1gor (UID#2620)

      Of course I made a mistake in post . What I ment to say was

      … I think it has to do with higher motivation and intelligence found in the military than in the civilian world and being in an all volunteer force.

      From what I’ve gathered, you pretty much salute the Flag, then salute people of higher rank, return salute to people of lower rank then go to your job. Bullshit around til brass comes and tells you to do something. Waste no time doing said activity til it’s done perfect. Bullshit around more.

      My brother’s Army, and he gets ordered around nonstop. Navy is much more laid back, but still extremely professional. Airforce is just lazy. Coast Guard is just beer and chips, with unrealistic expectations for joining.

    20. Vote -1 Vote +1DemolitionsGeek (UID#984)

      Also, and addendum: The only time in the Navy that you are truly “ordered around” is bootcamp. After that it’s smooth sailing, figuratively and literally.

    21. Vote -1 Vote +1motterbe (UID#2800)

      This discussion alone made me sign up (although I was gonna anyway cuz this site seems cool). I’m currently in the navy and I am here to tell you go for it Demo, although you do get ordered around now and then more so in the form of you’re told to do something and its expected to get done. Its not a bad gig though, I work on F/A-18’s and I got a backseat ride in one, pretty fricken sweet.

      One inaccuracy though, an aircraft carrier can hold 4000 ships company plus 1500 air wing for a total of over 5500 sailors, a lil more than your 3000 estimate.
