What it does is smash particles together so they annihilate (Electrons and positrons). As the matter and antimatter makes contact, they annihilate and produce gamma rays. The gamma rays then form into a lot of smaller matter and antimatter particles, which exist for only fractions of seconds before they disintegrate back into gamma rays. To get to the point: They are looking for the Higgs Boson. the "theory of everything" as a mathematical pattern was discovered decades/centuries ago. More recently (2007) it was discovered how it related to particle physics. It predicts about 20 more types of particles we don't know about. The Higgs Boson is one that kinda "is" matter.
