    Why, when I see those pics, do I start to think: “OK, now the creeps will follow the shortest path to the other side, so the best spots for the towers are….”

    Vauban fort. Designed to counter artillery by creating overlapping fields of fire and low, thick, angled surfaces.

    As opposed to a big monolithic thing – like a traditional castle – that you could shoot at eas.ily
