Is there anything that you would like to do
that is legal
that doesn’t hurt anybody
that would be fun
Do you stop yourself
because of social stigma
because of your job
because of what people would think
because you’re no good at it
because nobody wants to hear it?

If the answer is “yes”
then YOU ARE NOT FREE

People who usually complain about freedom excessively are people who usually advocate anarchy.

  2. reboot on January 3rd, 2008 3:27 pm

kind of lame. I can’t even imagine who it would apply to. Closeted homosexuals? Wii owners?

@diabeetus, WTF are you on? Nobody is advocating anarchy, the image even acknowledges legality as a valid consideration.

It might even be pro-anarchism, but arguing that even though such things ARE legal, people don’t do them.

    Does this make sense…?

  4. natedog on January 3rd, 2008 4:07 pm

doesn’t freedom also mean the freedom to NOT do something if you dont want to?

  5. deuce on January 3rd, 2008 4:26 pm

This is too wordy… I would change it to:

Is there anything that you would like to do
    that doesn’t hurt anybody
    that would be fun
    that is illegal

    If the answer is “yes”
    then YOU ARE NOT FREE

Much more appropriate in today’s authoritarian societies.

    IE:
I won’t get a tattoo cause of what people would think.

    or

i won’t date that girl because my friends will mock me

    or

I can’t talk about my religious views because I know that I’ll lose my job

  7. schulzbrianr on January 3rd, 2008 7:02 pm

Is this supposed to imply that there is some sort of law restricting these activities? Or that there should be a law to make sure your friends don’t insult you for dating an unacceptable female? If you don’t do something because you are afraid of the reaction:

“I won’t get a tattoo cause of what people would think.”

“i won’t date that girl because my friends will mock me”

Then you are not free, but those types of freedoms should not be protected by law. You’re own insecurity is something you have to man up (or woman up) and conquer on your own.

Religion is different, because everybody gets their panties in a bunch over their God, Gods, or lack thereof, or what have you. You are free to practice any sort of religion you want, as long as it does not infringe upon anyone else.

I kind of get you’re drift, tiki. I guess I just don’t see much of any of those issues. Maybe its because I’m a no good, hippy, liberal, but I just don’t know anybody who thinks like that.
Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose.

I think this has a connection to the 420 movement. It stands to reason.

I didn’t make this image, but I think it’s talking about self-emancipation. It’s like that line in the Principia Discordia “Ye have locked yerselves up in cages of fear–and, behold, do ye now complain that ye lack FREEDOM!” Even things you like, such as your preferences and opinions can be your jailers if they restrict you from doing stuff you want to do.

    BAAAAAAAW I CANT LISTEN TO MY IPOD IN CLASS ;_;

  12. Hepathos on January 3rd, 2008 10:58 pm

Yeah, like I really want to rape the girl next door, but nooooooo….

  13. bluebec on January 4th, 2008 1:05 am

I didn’t read it as legal freedom but personal freedom. If you don’t do something because of your own insecurities, then you are not free within yourself.

  14. AlecDalek on January 4th, 2008 4:55 am

My definition of freedom is some topless chick.

  15. SirWishbone on January 4th, 2008 9:09 am

Great… Now all of those of wannabe Furries on MCS will have the courage to make fursuits and go to lame conventions so they can find someone to yiff.

You people are missing the point. The idea is that we are not free because WE MAKE OURSELVES NOT FREE! all the things above:
    social stigma
    job
    of what people would think
    you’re no good at it
    nobody wants to hear it?

Only apply BECAUSE WE LET THEM APPLY! If I didn’t care what people thought, then so many more options would open up. But as it is, I am trapping myself behind my own barriers.

Such limitations only exist because we let them

  17. jeffapotimus on January 4th, 2008 1:18 pm

    Fucking hippie.
