Don’t look at me. Im Catholic, and I dont believe half the stuff in the old testament.

Now Jews on the other hand…

    natedog

just to play devil’s advocate (no pun intended), if you track the human population rate backwards, then it tapers off about 4500 years ago, when this flood supposedly happened. and also, the ark reportedly came to rest in the mountains of turkey, which coincides with the fact that human history goes right back to mesopotamia & the fertile crescent. I’m just saying.

    OmfgWtfZergd

Human history starts at about 8,000 years ago. Written history and civilization starts 4,000 years ago.

However, according to the National Enquirer, the Ark as indeed been found. It was found in a large crater on Mars. I knew only aliens could do this.

    eric

OmfgWtfZergd: “Human history starts at about 8,000 years ago.”

Except for the villages from about 12,000 years ago found in Turkey and the ‘Aphrodite’ fertility sculptures from about 28,000 years ago, of course… 8)

Cuniform writing has been found dating from about 5,000 years ago.

Are you refering to the foundation of Greece about 8,000 years ago as the beginning of human history?

    natedog

eric, you sound like you know what you’re talking about, but you really don’t. The Greeks emerged about 3500 years ago. the Romans, Hebrews, Chinese, and Egyptians all came before them. All ancient civilizations show up in history with vast knowledge and practical applications of math, law, engineering, language, etc.

    OmfgWtfZergd

The first civilization was Mesopotamia, which started at about 8,000 years ago, maybe earlier. The Greek civilization came to existence at about 3,000.

    Max

STOP! YOU’RE HUMORING OBVIOUS TROLL (diabeetus) END IT NOW BEFORE HE GROWS TOO POWERFUL!

    LordPartyTime

I hate to be picky, but when we make fun of christian beliefs, make fun of them in their entirety. The artist has it wrong, it was seven of every clean animal and two of every unclean. (Genesis 7:2-3 for those that require reference)
So, not only do we have multitudes of meek animals flocking to a manmade structure, but even the artists touting this theory cannot even portray it correctly!!

    eric

Natedog: Semantics. 1500 BC (about 3500 years ago) is when the Greek city-states were large and powerful.

I could be wrong, but I believe the Romans followed the Greeks, adopting their Gods and Goddesses. Of course, they devoured other cultures as well.

OmfgWtfZergd: Greece was inhabited 8,000 years ago – there are villages from that time period. Turkey had villages 12,000 years ago. So I suppose it depends on what you mean by ‘civilization’.

Part of the problem is that there are so few intact sites – people tend to build on the ruins of older groups because those were the good spots to build in the first place.

LordPartyTime: My reference is seven PAIRS of each clean animal, not just seven – makes more sense that way… 8)

    knogoodidleft

how much longer can this cult continue?

    LordPartyTime

eric, i bow to your wisdom, in re-reading i see your reference.

@kogoodidleft: well, since it’s been around a lot longer than you, i’m sure it’ll stick around longer than you will, too. If you don’t believe it, and don’t want to believe it, don’t trouble yourself with it.

    natedog

you know, over a 1/3rd of the world claims to be christian. or at least the CIA thinks so.

    www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/xx.html

    coolghoul

Actually, this isn’t what most Christians believe in. But most of the people that post here actually have no clue as to what Christianity is about. Neither do most Christians for that matter…

    LordPartyTime

And, coolghoul, you are the only person who is a christian that knows exactly what christianity is? My my, don’t we think a lot of ourselves. This is the problem with organized religion, everyone thinks their version of god should be the only version. As long as two different minds exist, there will be two different versions of god, or the origin of man be it evolution or whatever else there is.

Coolghoul, I’m not going to tell you that i think you’re a bad christian, or that i think i know more than you, because i dont know you. But I will let you know that I resent you attempting to be high and mighty, on your little soap box there.

    coolghoul

Yeah, I know I come across as an arrogant bastard, it’s one of my shortcomings. But I did say most, not all. But, my first point to you would be that Christianity has absolutely nothing to do with organized religion.

    LordPartyTime

Any condemnation of ‘christianity’ is an attack on a founded belief. Christianity itself is an organized religion. Personal beliefs and personal faith is entirely separate.

    LordPartyTime

Notice i said attack, criticism and mockery is all well and good. If you cant laugh at yourself, what reason is there to laugh?

    knogoodidleft

LodPartytime – It’s because I’m proud to be an American.

And “they” say the quote “In God We Trust” is not religious, nor political, but patriotic. Google it.

You have faith in somethings, I have faith in other things. To believe in an afterlife, seems so far fetched to me, seriously I don’t even have that much time in my basic day to be so bored to worry about after I die.

    LordPartyTime

You’re proud to be an American. Good. I’m glad. The quote is indeed religious. However, in this country you don’t have to believe the same as everyone else. You are just as entitled to think colored people are inferior. You are just not allowed to act on that feeling. You are entitled to believe whatever you want. Do you feel threatened that some people believe in a god or afterlife? I am proud to be an american as well, and it forces me to beg the question: how much longer can your intolerance last?

    knogoodidleft

Nope, don’t feel threatened, But I don’t think Religion should be in our lives (Government) for those that choose not to believe, Same idea – you got in trouble for saying a silent prayer, by somebody that didn’t believe, could pull a vice versa different person (ME) could be scolded/punished because he didn’t believe and refused to bow head and say prayer before eating.

It is standard to “Swear to God” before testimony , if atheist you have the option to “Affirm”

“do you swear to god to tell the truth”

    “ummm no?”

…funny story, but another time – judge had a great sense of humor.

we need a neutral balance here – where religion is not spreading its religion all over the place. You stay on your side of the room, divided evenly by that duct tape. I’m not an anti-Christian I just don’t want all this jibber jabber in my life.

how much longer can your intolerance last?

    Till the day I die.

I think, because I know we all gain knowledge as we age, But in short of having an amazing religious experience – There is no god in my life.

not a personal attack, but a honest question – What do you get out of religion?

    LordPartyTime

I get a sense of relief that the life I live is worth something beyond what i make of it, because i screw it up, and if life and my entire existence was based on only what i make of it, i’m sorely disappointed. But that’s about all i get from religion.

I agree we need to limit the influence religion has. We also need to limit the degree with which the government can regulate religion. It’s not a perfect world, and it’ll probably never be, either. But hey, it’s better than being forced into religion by the government, isn’t it? The reason for the pilgrimage to the americas? Big step up, i’d say.

As to the court-room situation, i can see how that would go, probably gave all involved a good laugh. Hell, i laughed just thinking about what may have happened.

I have plenty of athiest friends, catholic friends, mormon friends, buddhist friends, and even a hindu friend. We all get along, you know why? No-one pushes their religion on another. In fact, I’ve probably showed more religious zeal here than i’ve shown in real life. LOL.

    The Matrix: Rebooted

“You are just as entitled to think colored people are inferior. You are just not allowed to act on that feeling.”
That’s not true at all, you can act on that feeling in many ways. There are certain ways that discrimination has been outlawed (eg employment, segregation), but there’s plenty of racist douchebaggery still going on and it’s perfectly legal.
In my mind, its more legitimate to be “intolerant” of religion because you don’t choose where you were born or the color of your skin, but you do choose your religion.

    LordPartyTime

“racist douchebaggery” I take it that by this statement you are not in favor of racism? That’s good. However, you show yourself to be just as ignorant and bigoted as those who cannot see a person for who they are and are instead focused on their color, their language, or their religious beliefs.

Legitimizing intolerance is the first step to a world that would have looked pretty dang good to any of those men in the pointy white robes, or even to nazi germany. Heil reboot?

    The Matrix: Rebooted

I believe that it is ok to judge people by their choices. Race is not a choice, religion is. Therefore, it is wrong to judge someone by their race, but ok to judge someone by their religion.
If a person chooses to believe the world is flat and denies evidence to the contrary, that person is stupid. I’m under no moral or legal obligation to respect that person’s choices. Especially when that person starts voting for school board members or research budgets.
What part of that is ignorant or bigoted? It’s quite logical and consistent.

    knogoodidleft

I got plenty of friends that are religious, most Christian, and bobby, he doesn’t talk about his religion but loves his curry. hell I even dated a good ole’ christian girl, But the “christians” i know…ehhh are not traditional, thus in my book, there not religious.

I always got a kick out of the christians getting mad about Halloween falling on a sunday, saying it was un-holy or some bs, the irony

    LordPartyTime

Reboot: it is my belief that a person has every right to choose as they believe, and be free of persecution or bigotry for that choice. In fact, thats what the founding fathers insinuated with every document penned. If you are not American, or do not also adhere to these ideals, then you are not worth conversing with on any scale.

You give an example for your justification of your small minded bigotry as the belief of a flat world. Yet, that can be proven. Those whom you choose to discriminate against cannot be so easily disproven.

Your entire basis for the lack of respect you show your fellow human being is not only deplorable, but laughable. Therein lies your bigotry and ignorance, as well. You attribute a black man more respect because of his skin color than a red, yellow, brown or white man because of their beliefs. That, reboot, is even more unreasonable than racism.

Knogoodidleft, the halloween thing is funny though. Most christians i know are as you say, not traditional. But does one have to ascribe to tradition in order to have religion?

    LordPartyTime

*amendment to opening statment* choose as they believe in regard to religion.

    The Matrix: Rebooted

“it is my belief that a person has every right to choose as they believe, and be free of persecution or bigotry for that choice.”
I agree with that, but we might have different views of what constitutes “persecution” and “bigotry”. Should flat-earthers be lynched? No.
Should flat-earthers be mocked and shamed for their deliberate ignorance? You bet, that’s free speech.

“Those whom you choose to discriminate against cannot be so easily disproven.”
Not really. It is a complicated topic, but the facts are all there. You have to systemically deny 150 years of successful science in order to discredit the theory of evolution. There are still some details to debate (just like the Earth is not a perfect sphere), but the premise is just as well founded and supported as “the round Earth theory”.

“Your entire basis for the lack of respect you show your fellow human being is not only deplorable, but laughable. Therein lies your bigotry and ignorance, as well.”
It’s beliefs and choices that I don’t respect, you still have all the dignity afforded to a human being. I’ve been very careful in all my post to keep that distinction.
For instance, you might be a nice, friendly person and I respect that. But I don’t have to respect your beliefs. If you’re in a class that I TA, I’m not going to give you a passing grade for putting “God did it” on a test. That’s the wrong answer. If you show up to a school board meeting and say that your beliefs should be taught along side evolutions, I will shout you down until you cry and I won’t feel bad about it. If you try to pass a bill that restricts science based on your beliefs, I will march in the streets against it.
If you could keep your beliefs from affecting my life, I would have no cause to complain, that it isn’t the way it is, is it? That’s what I mean when I say I don’t have to tolerate your beliefs.

    LordPartyTime

“Should flat-earthers be mocked and shamed for their deliberate ignorance? You bet, that’s free speech.”
yes, that is free speech, but so is yelling fire in a crowded theatre. There are restrictions to your free speech just as there are to mine.

“You have to systemically deny 150 years of successful science in order to discredit the theory of evolution.” by the definition of the word theory, to which evolution ascribes, it has not been proven. While I am not saying you are wrong for believing it, I personally refuse to. I picked a different theory.

“It’s beliefs and choices that I don’t respect, you still have all the dignity afforded to a human being. I’ve been very careful in all my post to keep that distinction.” I believe the same, and if I have in any way failed to make the same distinction, i apologize.

“For instance, you might be a nice, friendly person and I respect that.” I believe, if we had met in person, we would probably have become drinking buddies.

Putting “God did it” is not an acceptable answer (to me) for any question that should be asked in school. Since evolution is only a theory, as is every other explanation of the origin of the earth, it should not be taught. Nor should creationism. Proven mutations/evolution, processes that have been re-created according to the proven fact, can, and in fact should, be taught. [this is only in a science class, i would not expect a civil war to be re-created to validate its veracity].

I in no way want my beliefs to hamper or hinder your life. However, if i might ask, how does a belief other than yours affect your personal life? I am not so vain as to think that everyone in the world must believe the same as i do, and so knowing that other people have separate beliefs in no way does me harm. Having a “world origins” class [or segment] in any but a college campus is, however, unacceptable.

    LordPartyTime

And I do see my remarks “Therein lies your bigotry and ignorance, as well.” as being inflammatory and having the seasoning of a personal attack. I put that to words only because of the remarks i had seen “i’m under no moral or legal obligation to respect that person’s choices.” “In my mind, its more legitimate to be “intolerant” of religion because you don’t choose where you were born or the color of your skin, but you do choose your religion.” Here, you would seem to be saying that it is perfectly legitimate to discriminate against homosexuals as well, for some of them claim it is a choice to swear off the opposite gender. I have quite a few friends who are in fact homosexual, some claim it’s a choice, others say that it’s the way they are biologically. I, personally, am not homosexual, and am not going to presume to tell them which of them is right. Just as I was not around at the beginning of the world, and am not going to tell you who is right.

    The Matrix: Rebooted

“by the definition of the word theory, to which evolution ascribes, it has not been proven.”
“Since evolution is only a theory, as is every other explanation of the origin of the earth, it should not be taught. Nor should creationism.”
Nothing is every Proven in science, so by that standard no science should be taught in schools, which is ludicrous. Evolution is a theory that has been formulated, tested and supported by the scientific method. Creationism has not. Therefore one should be taught in a science class and other should not. That’s not complicated, is it?
“However, if i might ask, how does a belief other than yours affect your personal life?”
I’ve already given several examples of governmental anti-science actions. Since the government is pander to people with your beliefs, I hold people with your beliefs responsible.
Also, “No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less”. The fact that you choose to accept the framework for biology and implicitly discredit all of science inevitably does affect me. Especially when there’s a lot of you.
I didn’t count homosexuality, because I don’t think it’s a choice. And if it is a choice, its an consequential one, like preferring blonds or brunettes.
All other points agreed and conceded. If your ever in Seattle, let me know, we’ll have brew.

    arkhamb

Wow!!! That picture is almost as unbelievable as people flying dogs into outer space…
Oh wait, the Russians actually did that.

    LordPartyTime

The situation must be different there than i have experienced here, and in some few other places. But to each his own, i am glad of opinions such as yours, to provide myself with definition for mine own opinions.

Sounds like a plan, I’ll prolly be up there sometime in ’08, got a friend that loves warp tour, but wont go anywhere else but Seattle.

    Max

So why do people spend time arguing this stuff? Serious question.

    LordPartyTime

I do it because i’m bored at work and have restricted internet access. And it gives perspective on why other people behave the way they do. As well, it firms my own beliefs by bringing to light just why I believe something.

    Max

hm, ok. As long as no one thinks they’re gonna convince the other side. Pretty futile, that.

    The Matrix: Rebooted

“So why do people spend time arguing this stuff?”
the money, the fame, the women. mostly for the women

    LordPartyTime

Mostly, i would agree with you max. However, reboot just convinced me to change my answer to women. Much better reason, that.

    natedog

    mmm, women.

I am a Mormon,I believe in my religion with all my might mind and soul. our church is called the church of Jesus Christ of latter day saints, these are the latter days! I am not trying to upset any of you but Mormonism is the right path to go down and if your gonna’ go down it you better do it quick because the lord is coming soon! here are some of the things that we believe in:

    ARTICLES OF FAITH
    1. We believe in God the eternal father and in his son, Jesus Christ, and in the holy ghost.

    2. We believe that men will be punished for their own sins and not for Adam’s transgression.

    3. We believe that through the atonement of Christ all mankind may be saved by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the gospel.

    4. We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the gospel are first, faith in the lord Jesus Christ, second repentance, third baptism by immersion for the remission of sins, fourth laying on of hands for the gift of the holy ghost.

    5. We believe that a man must be called of god by prophesy and by the laying on of hands by those who are in the authority to preach the gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof.

    6. We believe in the same organization that existed in the primitive church, namely apostles, prophets, pastors teachers evangelists and so forth.

    7. We believe in the gift of tongues, prophesy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues and so forth.

    8. We believe the bible to be the word of god as far as it is translated correctly, we also believe the book of Mormon to be the word of god.

    9. We believe all that God has revealed, all that he does now reveal, and we believe that he will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the kingdom of God.

    10. We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the ten tribes, that Zion the new Jerusalem will be built upon the American continent, that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and, that the earth will be renewed and receive. it’s paradisaical glory.

    11. We claim the privilege of worshiping almighty god, according to the dictates of our own conscience and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how where or what they may.

12.We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates in obeying honoring and sustaining the law.

    13. We believe in being honest true chaste benevolent virtuous and in doing good to all men, indeed we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul, we believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things and hope to be able to endure all things, if there is anything virtuous , lovely, or of good report, or praiseworthy we seek after these things.
