All the religious controversy about this book (or media hype anyway) kinda makes me wanna read it. But being over 20 (or over 13 for that) makes me feel like I’m just a bit old for it..

Has anyone here read it and can comment?

I’m in my 30’s and I plan to read it as soon as I can get my hands on it, so whatever floats your boat.

I’m 20 and I just started it. I’ve not gotten far enough into it for the major controversies to be addressed, but I think it’s pretty good so far.

Who says you can’t read it if your over 20? It’s all how old you feel, not how old you are. At the rate your going, you’re gonna age prematurely…

    Can’t read a fairy tale over 13… Pffft… 😛

    Mythstae

I’m 22, and I read all three of them last year. I enjoyed them. It was very interesting, getting far enough along in the story to understand some of the parallels between the universes and whatnot. I highly recommend them. 🙂

I’m 22 and I read it a few months ago – loved it. I read the second book last month, and plan to read the third after christmas. They are very good reads.

I read these books about 7 years ago, and I’ve read them multiple times since then (most recently about a month ago). They’re great books no matter what age you are, and you’ll get a lot more out of them than you would if you were 13.

I have mixed feelings about the movie though… its got a few scenes that are done amazingly well, and a few actors who really know their character, but the storyline (in the movie) is rather jumpy. I can’t say much about character development or surprise aspects because I know the books quite well, and the movie didn’t deviate too much (although, in the theater I was in, there was a very profound “OH SHIT!” during one very nice fight scene). All in all, I think the movie was good (obviously not as good as the book), and all those Catholic extreemists need to just calm down… yes the books are Atheistic in nature, but they’ve done a good job at masking that aspect in the movie. The Magisterium (bad dudes) looks more like a ritualized overpowered government than a religious group.

I am in love with these books.

The movie was EXTREMELY watered-down, as far as the religious aspects of it. I really don’t think people, especially children, could make the connection between the Magisterium and ANY sort of religion. They just keep calling it “the authority”, and it seems more like a government agency of some sort.

The thing that amuses me is that people are throwing a fit over the FIRST book, because it’s the least offensive of the three, and the movie left the end open for a sequel.

    I’m 20 and I can’t read.

I’m 23, and my girlfriend is 21. We’ve both read these books and love them. Even if you ignore the controversy type aspects (which continue through all three books), its got a simply great story. Excellent character development, world development, a good flowing story that doesn’t focus to much on a single element (though Lyra is the focus for the most part). Absolutely excellent books.

You can’t really ignore the controversial moments. The whole trilogy reaches it’s climax in a war against God.

I really just meant in the first book. It doesn’t get ridiculously anti-church until the middle of the second IIRC. There is definitely some stuff in the first book that basically states catholics=evil, though. I don’t think all Christians should be utterly offended, because its mainly about Catholics overly structured approach to religion = total dominance.

    Phyreblade

Actually what baffles me is why anyone should get offended at all. It’s just a work of fiction, after all. None of it is real. Sure, it shows a facet of a real religion in a negative light, but works of fiction do that all the time. People take these things waaay too seriously…

Awesome. Thanks for all the feedback! 😀

I think I’ll drop by Coles tonight to see if it’s in stock.
