    Yep. Sure does.

    The Matrix: Rebooted

Take out the work “magically” and, yeah, that’s about right.

    orbitn

After thousands of years, i don’t think any great epiphany regarding the primum movens will be brought about by a bumper sticker (i.e. “Big Bang theory: God said it, and BANG it happened”*), or this post.

That being said, someone a while ago said MCS is becoming less funny. Maybe that has to do with the recent fads of tremendous amounts of NSFW pictures of random females and religious commentary.

    * = Someone thought they were uberclever with that bumper sticker. It bothers me. But, that’s basically the Catholic way of working the big bang theory into the dogma. Also in line with other religions, most notably Taoism and Islam. I love it when redneck cleverness backfires.

Cliff notes version: Less Religion, Less booty, more cats in funny poses (consider it a baseline)

    slakinator

Just because atheists don’t believe in god(s) doesn’t mean that they automatically believe that the universe just popped into existence. We could really care less how the world came to be (existentialism?) Most of us believe that religion doesn’t have any power to define the meaning of life, so we don’t adhere to one.

    Caio

Orbitn: Is that a recent trend? I can remember when there were way more threads about religion.

newai, any creation account can be deemed magical. That’s a pretty week argument. How about the magical man in the sky?

    knogoodidleft

Ah, the universe, we may never know and will always speculate. But atheism does not mean you believe in the “big bang” theory, just no God. never ending universe, pretty big, lots of possibilities that we just don’t know, look at the stars some time

    Paul_Is_Drunk

Being an formerly strong adherent of Existentialist Theory, I can tell you it’s not about how the world was created*, rather how one should lead a life in a world where existence precedes essence.

*(That’s left to people who have more concern for it: religions who need it to ‘prove’ their relgion, and scientists who are trying to further explain the universe)

And, YES, this site has become less funny.

I think it started around the time users could start submitting their own pics, and perhaps around the time I introduced this site to my former coworkers who just happened to all be very very devout Christians.

Okay, that last one is probably coincidence, but damn am I glad I quit that job. There is nothing more awkward than starting at a board room of people praying every Friday as if it’s actually going to make a difference in sales.

To quote 3rd Rock from the Sun:
    (Praying before a basketball game)
“So our god is more powerful than there god?”
“We’re praying to the same god!”
    “Then what’s the point?”

    orbitn

Im not sure it’s a recent trend with the religion thing, but it’s getting annoying. As far as the plethora of nude pics, that definately got worse when when tiki let others start posting; and the unfunniness started about then too.

So if squizzle is just absolute fail now, and somethingawful has been terrible since T=0, fark is useless, 4chan is NSFW++, and icanhascheezburger is good for a quick laugh only sometime.. can we declare the death of internet image-based humor? bash.org is wonderful if you go through the right ones (my favorite is 111338).. anyone know any good image funnies with no naughtybits showing?

    WTFBURGERZ

Lol it’s so funny that there’s all the sexually explicit, hilarious, immature humor, and raunchy stuff on here. But when something like this is posted, MCS turns into an intellectual and well organized religious debate.

    orbitn

I’m not sure tiki is even a real person. I mean, nobody has even seen a picture of the bloke. If tiki is, indeed, a bloke. Some of the pics on the site have made me wonder if tiki = tikigoddess. Or tikibi? hmm. Not that that’s important, but tiki might just be a machine. I have no problem with human sexuality, but when computers have sexualities.. it’s time to grab your teddy bears and run.

    Caio

I might agree with you in principle, Orbitn, but when a group of people say they want more modding, and that more modding happens, a whole different group of people start saying they liked it with less modding. Likewise, if Tiki got rid of people contributing pictures, people would complain that there aren’t enough pictures, and so on. From his view, everything is an insane catch-22 that’s going to open floodgates of complaints no matter what he does.

Me, I like to be my own mod, and just skip images that don’t interest me. Because really, everything’s a matter of taste.

    Paul_Is_Drunk

    Good point Caio.

Let’s not turn Tiki into another Moot.

    Foinlavin

Religion is just a better strategy. It’s not as if I am going to be rejected from getting into Science Heaven if I believe in God, but I might go to hell if I don’t.

    Paul_Is_Drunk

    Better strategy? 😛

I don’t know, Science Heaven does have XBox 360s.

I’d point out the bazillion faults with that argument, but I’m sure he’s joking.

    42

Way to turn the other cheek, Christians.

    Caio

Well, Iddq, Jews have always interpreted that as divine law. And Jesus said:

“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.” (Matthew 5:38-42, NIV)

But I do recognize that it is the cornerstone of christian thought to ingnore the living fuck out of Jesus – save his birth and death – and just pull shit out of context and do whatever the fuck you want.

    Caio

Well, I suppose it varies from atheist to atheist, but the other day, I was listening to a First Nation’s Elder who was, for all intents and purposes, an atheist, give a long talk about ethics. Unlike you, Iddq, she seem pretty balanced to me, and she’s certainly not done the kind of harm American Christians have. Her nation has never participated in a genocide, dropped an A-Bomb. Unlike German christians, she didn’t build gas chambers and push the Jews through them. The largest battle in her tribe’s recorded history had a heady death toll of 16. They never lynched negroes.

Now, interestingly, doesn’t your moral framework include ‘don’t kill’ as one of its ten main commandments. Wow, glad you christians have set such a consistent moral standard for all atheist americans.

    Paul_Is_Drunk

Taoists, Confucians, and select Buddhist sects are atheistic… yet they have morals. Thomas Jefferson was an atheist, yet he helped write the laws that govern our land.

    Wha? How? O_o

Surprisingly, it seems to be in human nature to work with others in society, lest we harm ourselves.

Of course, maybe some of us would go around killing people if we weren’t scared of some big guy in the sky telling you don’t or I’ll burn you in fire forever.

Yeesh, our government doesn’t believe in cruel and unusual punishment, yet your God does.

    LonelyTylenol

    Institutionalized religion:

    Magic Man done it!

    Makes perfect sense.

    Mikki

I’m what you might call a creationist, though that’s a complicated unsure road I’m traveling right now, but I can tell you with as much certainty as I can muster that yes, there was a big bang. I saw this whole thing about it on Discovery Science channel. The whole bit about the universe expanding proves that there was a central starting point and something went bang. Bill Nye was the host and everything. You can always trust Bill Nye.

    Paul_Is_Drunk

    *sigh* Internet Argument.

Hitler wasn’t an atheist. (Godwin’s rule).

Most Greek and Roman scholars didn’t believe in their gods or any afterlife. Two of the most prominent civilizations of all time. Rome only fell after it became a Christian nation. Explain that one.

Actually, don’t bother. You’ll ignore it anyway.

Kinda like how you once again ignored the fact that both Confucianism and Taoism are atheistic religions that have been around centuries and ruled dynasties, but in your estimation atheism has only been around recently.

    Paul_Is_Drunk

    Okay, one more quick one:

The icing on this pathetic cake is that you realize that all OTHER religions are wrong, you just have a blind spot towards your own.

    Caio

Iddq, your mind is chaotic. First of all, I’m only an atheist in that I don’t believe that God is a dude with a beard sitting on a cloud waiting for us to feed his ego and demanding that we read translations of extinct languages literally (lol). I am a religious person though.

You made the argument that Christians defined the moral codes of the US via law, and that US morality is drawn from Christianity, hinting that the Bible is the only possible source of morality. I merely pointed out that Christians don’t follow their own ethical codes. Neither does anybody, really. There is no religious on earth without ‘do unto others’ and there is almost no human alive who practises that very rule.

Instead of taking the argument all over the place, the onus would be on you to prove to me that morality is something entirely derived from religious text, and not merely something that happens when humans get together in groups.

    knogoodidleft

damn! did i miss the meeting where we hate empires now?

    Paul_Is_Drunk

    Quote from iddqd:

“Given the fact that atheists have had such short influence in terms of the history of mankind. One can only think the devastation an atheist could do if they ruled throughout human history.”

    My reply:

“Most Greek and Roman scholars didn’t believe in their gods or any afterlife. Two of the most prominent civilizations of all time. Rome only fell after it became a Christian nation.”

    Explanation:

Not only was this pagan nation one of the most successful of all time, many of its most prominent citizens were atheists. This proves A) atheism has not had a ‘short influence’ as you claim and B) the ruled throughout human history and no devastation was caused, despite your assertions.

To further counter your point, once Christianity was established as a state religion, the empire fell. This DRASTICALLY contradicts your ideas that atheists as rulers would cause a downfall, as in this case the OPPOSITE was true.

    As for atheistic religions:
Look up Confucianism and Taoism. They exist. They are religions. They don’t worship ANY gods. You can deny that all you want, but it’s true.

Oh, my favorite part is when you ignore my last statement and instead declare victory. When all else fails, right? Speaking of, when people start losing arguments and have no rational arguments left, they start to curse, just like you did.

I’ll bet anyone 100 internets iddqd never answers the question why he denies all other religions but not his own.

    Chenoan

More sense than christianity and scientology. They’re basically born from the same principles: higher being came down and did somethimg without sense/purpose/logic, now we exist 😀

though I will say Christianity is the lesser of the two evils.

    herp derp

lol you’ve got it all wrong…Atheism, in a broad sense, is the rejection of belief in the existence of deities(a god or goddess). In a narrower sense, atheism is specifically the position that there are no deities. Most inclusively, atheism is simply the absence of belief that any deities exist. Atheism is contrasted with theism, which in its most general form is the belief that at least one deity exists.
The term atheism originated from the Greek ????? (atheos), meaning “without god”, which was applied with a negative connotation to those thought to reject the gods worshipped by the larger society. With the spread of freethought, skeptical inquiry, and subsequent increase in criticism of religion, application of the term narrowed in scope. The first individuals to identify themselves as “atheist” appeared in the 18th century.
Atheists tend to be skeptical of supernatural claims, citing a lack of empirical evidence. Atheists have offered various rationales for not believing in any deity. These include the problem of evil, the argument from inconsistent revelations, and the argument from nonbelief. Other arguments for atheism range from the philosophical to the social to the historical. Although some atheists have adopted secular philosophies, there is no one ideology or set of behaviors to which all atheists adhere.
    ;D

    ruben

This is not what atheism is, although I think a majority of the atheists belive in this.
