Science have a good understanding of the big bang from a small fraction of a second after it happened, but what was there before and what caused it, all they can really say is a ‘singularity’. Aside from that, physicists have speculated all kinds of interesting things: The singularity was another collapsed universe, that there is no time in a singularity and so on. It’s become a clichÃƒÂ© amongst physicists that that topic is very close to religion, and indeed, a lot of the physicists’ guesses parallel various creation stories (Paul mentioned cyclical time). It could be the case that we’re on to something, or it could be the case that science and the human mind have reached their limits, and we’re falling back on the same old mental devices to fill the gaps. Science is as much a human institution as religion is, even if it’s a bit more methodical.

Doesn’t really matter though. Unless you live in Dumbfuck, Alabama or some Yemeni oasis, religion is less about creation and more about ethics and an overall metaphysics. Hell, most religions (especially tribal religions) lack a universe-creation story all together.

Anyway, religions universe-creation stories shouldn’t have to rub against religion, and the big bang theory doesn’t really effect any religion I know of (unless you’re a retard). It’s pretty much just a curiosity.

This is the way I figure it. You believe in an infinite god, you’d think he’d be powerful enough that there could be no question of his existence. If there isn’t a god, where did the universe come from? If there is a god, where did HE come from? You can’t have something from nothing, after all. Yeah, I’m agnostic. Religion, god, all I know is, I exist. I’m not sure about any of you other people.

Fundamental flaw with “can’t get something from nothing” argument #1 – All religions claim something came from nothing. That argument neither confirms nor denies a theistic or atheistic point of view.

Flaw of said argument #2 – Need for a beginning. If time is infinite, there will reach a point where the past will also stretch into infinity. At said point, it can be said that the past stretches into infinity. Some would say that there was indeed no beginning, merely a never ending cycle, which is what time was conceived to be before current Judea-Christian values.

There’s more, but it gets complicated.

Flaw of argument #3 – You’re using logic to defend religion. No. Bad. Inherently, there is no logic to be defined here, simply mythology. Also, science is based on logic and empirical evidence, so someone has or is probably already working on these theories. It’s simpler to look them up then to spout dogma, but when in doubt someone else will point them out to you.

I’m going back to drinking Wild Turkey and watch Law and Order: S.V.U.
