    I could have sworn that Buddhism did not have a deity and Buddha (Shakyamuni) was viewed more as a teacher than anything else since there were many Buddhas that came before him and many that will come after him.

    The fat buddha whose belly you rub for luck is Hotei, and is not the same as “the” Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama.
